Originally from the UK, Tom moved to the West Coast of Canada to paddle and ski. With an excellent foundation of 20+ years as a master boot fitter and head ski tech at Mountain Equipment Co-op and Intuition, Tom James is The Boot Mechanic. He is trusted by mountain guides, pro athletes, Olympians, ski bums, weekend warriors, and even his friends.

As you can see, Tom is a friendly goof with a contagious passion for skiing and boot fitting. As skiing, and ski touring in particular, continue to become ever more popular, Tom is a firm believer that no skier should suffer from sub-par boots. His vision is to contribute to our amazing ski community with his knowledge and passion:

• Education - Tom can’t possibly fit every skier, nor does every skier need his expert-level boot wizardry. Tom works with shops across Western Canada and the US to educate their retail staff and rely on him with their most challenging fits.

About Boot Fitting

Your feet are unique. Wide feet, narrow heels, high instep, hammer toes, one foot longer than the other, bunions, frostbite, cold-sensitive feet, extra toes, nerve damage, etc. Tom’s seen it all. Unfortunately, ski boots don't accommodate for this.

Without the right fit, many skiers experience pain, cold feet, or lack control over their skis, all of which can really take the fun out of skiing!

Over 20 years, Tom’s helped 10,000+ pairs of feet find the right fit for their snowy pursuits. Until the launch of this website in 2020, he’s relied entirely on referrals from happy clients, who have come to appreciate his high-quality craft and straightforward advice.

While most clients come to Tom for their alpine touring and recreational downhill boots, he’s fit boots for racers, park rats, snowboarders, and even hikers.
